Spyglass & Kettle Pub In Southbourne

I popped in for a quick meal in the early evening on Friday with my wife and son. It was a beautiful evening with the sun still in full swing and many people sitting outside in the garden.
The Spyglass enjoy a great location being just across the road from the southbourne cliffs and beautiful beach so it’s great if you fancy a walk after eating.
We actually struggled to find a seat as many of the tables were reserved and clearly there were a few parties booked in as some of the tables were kitted out with balloons etc.
It’s an order at the bar place so that we did and dinner was brought out in around 15 minutes which was fine. My wife decided to have two starters for her main course, and I went for a surf and turf.
Portion sizes are reasonable and the meals are usually served on the large oval plates. The chips were actually the highlight of my dinner, nice thick cut chips that were cooked well. However my steak wasn’t up to much, chewy unfortunately. The rest of my dinner was OK and my wife liked hers but described it as pretty ordinary.
It’s not a cheap place for the quality of food either really, I paid £11.95 for my surf and turf which I think was too much.
My experience of the place wasn’t great really and I certainly wouldn’t rush back. Perhaps the reason there were so many reserved tables was because of the hotel residents staying there.
I have been here before and at one time I think it was part of the Hungry Horse chain and I think the food was a little better then. The place could make a killing with all the tourism in the area if it was well run I’m sure.
